Week 5: Understanding Facebook for Businesses

Facebook business pages can be pretty intimidating if it is your first time creating one. This was my first time making one for my business and boy was it fun to learn about! I'm ready to share some things that I learned from my experience in Facebook business pages.

Post reach and post engagement may sound the same; however they are two completely different factors that Facebook keeps track of. Post reach focuses more on how many people stumble across your business on their timelines. Post engagement is focused on what people decide to do with your post. How do they engage with your posts? Facebook measures all the engagement users have on them from clicks all the way to sharing. Let's dive deeper into these topics!

Post reach indicates how well your product is reaching other users' Facebook feeds. It is also an indicator of how often your business name shows up on users' timelines. It is simply measuring how many people have seen your post. On Facebook, there are three different categories of "reach": Organic reach, paid reach, and viral reach. Organic reach represents the number of people who saw part of your business's content for free in their newsfeed after the content has been posted on your business page. Paid reach is the number of people who saw your business's post due to a promotion. In order to use promotions on your business page, you would have to spend money on ads. The more money you spend, the more people will see what your business is all about. Lastly, viral reach is the number of people who saw your post due to another Facebook user engaging with the content.

Post engagement is what happens when a user does more than just look at your business's post. Engagement would mean likes, comments, sharing, etc. For Facebook, engagement is counted on all the clicks a user does with that post. Post engagement plays a huge factor in Facebook's algorithm that determines your post reach. The more engaging your content is, the more likely your business page will reach out to other people.

Knowing the difference is important because it assists with the business figuring out how to strategically post on their business page. Post reach numbers are important if the business is trying to increase the number of followers they have or if they want certain posts to be seen by the business's followers. Post engagement numbers are important if the business is trying to establish a relationship with their followers. Post engagement also assists in increase followers' loyalty to the business and measures the follower's intent to take action on the post. I believe that it is super important to start building your following naturally. Listen to what your current followers want to see more of. After listening to their suggestions, create content and posts that meet their needs. If it is not engaging enough for them or does not have some value for them, the posts would not make a difference in your growth. Focus on the followers' needs and make meaningful posts.

Happy posting!

I commented on Marla Hope Design's (Marla's) cover photo, Jem'd Sweet's (Karin's) profile photo, and The Farm Baseball Clinic's (Chase's) cover photo. The reason why I commented on them was because the cover and profile photos are the first things users see when they browse through a Facebook business page. All three had very eye-catching images that made me interested in learning more about their business.
